RAAGMALIKA IN HINDI FILM 'RAM RAJYA'(1943)

Producer Vijay Bhatt's 'RAM RAJYA' was one of the most popular movies of that  early era of Hindi Cinema. It was released in the year 1943. Even Mahatma Gandhi saw this film,appreciated  it and also advocated the thought of 'RAM RAJYA' for our country.In this film,music director शंकर  राव व्यास  created a very beautiful रागमाला .He used the string of raagas:बहार ,केदार ,यमन कल्याण ,गौड़ सारंग ,खम्माज ,काफी ,बागेश्री and again बहार  for composing this raagmalika.The Lyrics of it were written by Ramesh Gupta which are:
"राजा रामचंद्र की जय!
देखो देखो राम  राज्य में चहुँ  दिश अजब उजियाली है।                       सुख सम्पति से हरी भरी इस भारत की फुलवारी है।।

कहीं यज्ञ हवन ,कहीं वेद पठन,गो माता की रखवाली है|                          गो माता की रखवाली है ||
हरे भरे हैं खेत,अन्न जल मिले सदा भर पेट ।                                  झूमती डाली डाली है,झूमती डाली डाली है ।।                                  वणिकों को व्यापार ,धर्म का ब्राह्मण पर सब भार,सूत को सेवा प्यारी है । जो ब्राह्मण प्रतिपाल क्षत्रिय,सुखी सब प्रजा हमारी है।।                          कहीं गीत मध्य ध्वनि ताल मिले,कहीं पायल की झंकार मिले|                स प ग प ग म स नि प ......छुम छुम छननन छुम छुम ........।।

कहीं मस्त वसंत तरंग में है ,कहीं काम रति के संग में है।                    कहीं अबीर गुलाल तरंग रचा ,कहीं भर भर झोली फाग सजा।              उन्माद भरी कहीं होली है ।।

कहीं सूरज चंदा जगमग से ,कहीं दीपक तारों से लगते ।                     श्रृंगार भरी दीपावली है ।।

देखो देखो राम राज्य में चहुँ दिश अजब उजियाली है ।                        सुख सम्पति से हरी भरी इस भारत  की फुलवारी है |                             इस भारत की फुलवारी है ।।

A BIRTH CENTENARY TRIBUTE TO USTAD AMIR KHAN

Ustad Amir Khan was born on 15 August,1912,in Indore(M.P.)in the family of musicians.His father Shahmir Khan was a court musician in Holkar Dynasty in Indore.Ustad Amir Khan developed a unique singing style of his own and gave new heights to Indore Gharana of Music.Here I will have my focus mainly on Ustad's contribution to film music.He worked for these movies:बैजू  बावरा (1952),शबाब (1954),झनक  झनक  पायल  बाजे (1955),रागिनी (1958),क्षुधित  पाषाण (1958) and गूँज उठी शहनाई (1959).In Baiju Bawra he gave playback for Tansen,on the screen played by actor Surendra.The film starts with his graceful rendering of an evening melody in राग  पूरिया  धनाश्री "तोरी जय जय करतार ....".Also the climax of this film had a wonderful jugalbandi in राग  देसी तोड़ी  sung by Ustad Amir Khan and Pt.D.V.Paluskar"आज  गावत  मन  मेरो  झूम  के ..."(one can listen to it, in an earlier article in this Blog, on music competition in films).Ustad Amir Khan worked for three more compositions in this film,"घनन  घनन  घन  गरजो ..."(राग  मेघ ),सरगम  in राग  दरबारी  and one जुगलबंदी  in राग  तोड़ी "लंगर  कांकरिया  जिन  मरो .."with Pt.D.V.Paluskar.You can  enjoy his Puriya Danashree, in the following audio clip.This prayer is Tansen's own composition and will definitely impress your minds.It is"तोरी जय जय करतार..।।भर दे आज झोलियाँ।तू रहीम दाता तू पाक परवरदिगार।।तोरी जय जय करतार ...।तानसेन को तू रब,ज्ञान दान दीजो सब।राग रंग साजत है,करत नैय्या पार।।तोरी जय जय करतार ....।।"                             

Music director Naushad again made the opening of his film SHABAB with a devotional song "दया  कर  हे  गिरधर  गोपाल,मीरा के प्रभु नन्दलाल ..."rendered beautifully by Ustad Amir Khan Saheb in राग  मुल्तानी .You may also enjoy this Bhajan  here in the following clip: 

Also music director Vasant Desai again used Ustad's magical voice for his famous musical film:' GOONJ UTHI SHAHNAI'.He gave a lovely composition in राग  भटियार , a morning melody sung by Ustad Amir Khan,"निस  दिनन  बिसरत  मोरा  संसार ,घन  वरण  सुंदर  तन  अति  शोभित  अपार .." and also a beautiful रागमालिका(one can listen to it, in another article on Ragmalika in this Blog) .The unique thing in these compositions is Jugalbandi of Ustad's vocal with Shahnai played by legendary artist Ustad Bismillah Khan.Listen to raga Bhatiyar and justify yourself,

Music director Om Prakash Nayyar also could not resist himself from using Amir Khan Saheb's famous com-osition in राग  ललित  "जोगिया  मोरे  घर  आये ,घर  घर  अलख  जगाये ,कानन  कुंडल  गल  वीच  सेली  ,अंग  भभूत  रमाये .."in his musical venture , film: :RAGINI.

When Ustad Ali Akbar Khan was composing music for film: KSHUDHIT PASHAN, then he offered Amir Khan Saheb some vocal songs and it was a magical experiment ,when Amir Khan Saheb sang a duet with Pratima Banerji composed in राग  बागेश्री :"कैसे कटे रजनी अब सजनी,पिया बिन मोसे रह्यो न जाये,कैसे कटे ... । घडी पल छिन मोरे जुग से बीतत हैं,उन बिन जिया  अति ही अकुलाये।।कैसे कटे रजनी अब सजनी....।नैना मोरे दरस के प्यासे,आशा झूठे देत  दिलासे।मन का पंछी रोवत तड़पत, मानत नाही मनाये।।कैसे कटे रजनी ..."The second composition was a thumri in raga khammaj.Khan Saheb did full justice in presenting this bandish.Its lyrics are:"पिया के आवन की मैं सुनत खबरिया,लाग रही चहुँ ओर नजरिया।।उमंग उठत है अंग अंग में ,बजत हिया में मधुर बंसुरिया।।पिया के आवन की मैं सुनत खबरिया .....।।"  Ustad Amir Khan innovated the Tarana singing in classical vocal,Many musicians said that Tarana is meaningless,but  Ustad Amir Khan made it worth listening,by incorporating the Persian verses and Hazarat Amir Khusro's poetry in his Tarana singings.He did a lot of research on it.He was a real genious.His untimely death in a car accident in Calcutta on 13Feb.1974 snatched him away from us.  

 I think, Amir Khan Saheb has done maximum number of compositions  for films,as compared to any other vocalist of Hindustani classical music..This article is a small tribute to the great works of this great artist.

RAAGMALIKA IN FILM 'SWADESH'

This ragmalika is like an oasis in the wide spread desert of Hindi film music.We are listening to a raagmalika  in a Hindi film after a very long gap of several years.The composition includes the raagas:- आसावरी , पीलू-खम्माज ,जैजैवंती ,बहार ,यमन-कल्याण and खम्माज  in a sequence.Music Director A.R.Rehman has shown his creativity and has done a memorable job for the lovers of classical music.The video clip presents the raagmalika from the film SWADESH. 

The playback singers are:Madhushree,Vijay Prakash and Ashutosh Gowarikar .The lyrics of raagmalika are as follows:

पल पल है भारी वो विपदा है आयी ,मोहे बचाने अब आओ रघुराई !

आओ रघुवीर आओ रघुपति राम आओ 

मोरे मन के स्वामी मोरे श्रीराम आओ 

राम राम जपती हूँ सुन लो मेरी राम जी !

बजे सत्य का डंका ,जले पाप की लंका !!

इसी क्षण तुम आओ मुक्त कराओ ,

सुन भी लो अब मेरी दुहाई !

पल पल है भारी वो विपदा है आयी ,मोहे बचाने अब आओ रघुराई !!

राम को भूलो ये देखो रावण आया है ,

फ़ैली सारी श्रृष्टि पर जिसकी छाया है !

राम राम का रटन ये जो तुमने है लगाया सीता,

सीता तुमने है राम में ऐसा क्या गुण पाया ?

गिन पायेगा उनके गुण कोई क्या,इतने शब्द ही कहाँ है ?

पहुचेगा उस शिखर पे कौन भला, मेरे राम जी जहाँ है !

जग में सबसे उत्तम है मर्यादा पुरुषोत्तम हैं ,

सबसे शक्तिशाली हैं फिर भी रखते संयम हैं !

पर उनके संयम की अब आने को है सीमा,रावण समय है मांग ले क्षमा !!

बजे सत्य का डंका जले पाप की लंका ,

आयें राजा राम करें हम प्रणाम 

संग लायें लक्ष्मण जैसा भाई !

पल पल है भारी वो विपदा है आयी,मोहे बचाने अब आओ रघुराई !!

राम में शक्ति अगर है, राम में साहस जो, 

क्यों नहीं आये अभी तक वो तुम्हारी रक्षा को?

जिनका वर्णन करने में थकती नहीं हो तुम यहाँ,

ये बताओ वो तुम्हारे राम हैं इस पल कहाँ ?

राम हैं मेरे हृदय में,राम ही धड़कन में हैं ,

राम मेरी आत्मा में राम ही जीवन में हैं ,

फूलों  की  सेज (1964) was second Hindi Movie of Music Director आदि  नारायण  राव .He again created a melodious Raagmalika in this film, reminding us of his memorable music score in the film ‘Suvarna Sundari'.The poetic lyrics were written by हसरत  जयपुरी .The whole raagmalika was picturized on a कत्थक  नृत्य नाटिका  on stage, superbly performed by our world class dancers: गोपी  कृष्ण  and वैजयंतीमाला .They presented fine ‘अभिनय’ alongwith ‘तोडा’, ‘टुकड़ा’, ‘परन’ and ‘चक्कर’. First composition “बिरहन  के  पास  बिरहा  की  आग ,
  तन मन सुलगाये,
  चमकत प्रेम ज्वाला नंदलाला ||
  जुल्मी याद आवन लागी ,
  मोहे रोज रोज तड़पावन  लागी …..
   सांवरो कहाँ? मैं  हूँ तिहारी ,
  प्रीत की मारी , आ जा मुरारी ||
  आ  भी  जा  रसिया ,
  मन  मोरा  प्यासा ||
  नैन कमल हैं निसदिन तरसे ,
  बिन बादल है झर झर बरसे ||
  बिन तोरे कछु नाही भावे ,
  आ रे आ मोरी थाम ले बैयाँ || 
  आ भी जा रसिया …।।”
  was sung by लता  मंगेशकर , in राग  अडाना , followed by a dance number:
“छुम   छुम  छुम  छुम  छुम्कत नाचत कन्हाई |
  चाल ढाल छवि न्यारी दे दे तारी ,
  तट बाजत पग नुपुर झंकारी ..” in the voice of मन्ना  डे  in राग  सारंग .
The next song is in the voice of लता :
"जा रे जा कान्हा जा रे जा |
  चलो छोडो मोरा हाथ जालिमा ,
  हटो तोसे हम न बोले जालिमाँ,
  कान्हा जा रे जा||"
  in राग  कल्याण  .
 Now मन्ना  डे  sings in राग  खम्माज  for Gopi Krishna showing कृष्ण  persuading राधा:
"हम से न रूठो राधा,जिया न जलाओ राधा|
  मुरली की तान तुम राधा |
  मोरा तुम ही राग, तुम ही रंग ,तुम ही प्राण हो,
  राधा  प्राण हो  …||".
Then happy mood is reflected by lovely कत्थक  Dance pieces and both sing a duet in राग  सोहिनी:
”मनमोहना  पिया तू जो मिला,
  मेरा खोया दिल मिल गया ||
  सुन सुन सुन मोरे सांवरिया ,
  रूंन  झुन झुन बजे पायलिया ||
  तन मन तो झूमे  प्रीत भरा,
  छुन छुन छुन नाचे तारों के साथ ||  
  मनमोहना पिया तू जो मिला ,
  मोरा खोया दिल मिल गया....... ||”
  in the voices of लता , मन्ना  डे  and chorus. Ballet comes to its end with सरगम  and dance instrumental in तीन  ताल . This composition was a confirmed proof of musical genius of  music directorआदि  नारायण  राव .

While talking about the Raagmalikas composed for Hindi films we must dicuss about the works of Music Director श्री  वसंत  देसाई  , who gave three such compositions worth remembering in three films,झनक झनक पायल बाजे (1955),गूँज उठी शहनाई (1959) and राम  राज्य (1967).First film had dance as its theme and the second had music as its main theme,the last one was a mythological movie.In the year 1955 a classic Hindi film dedicated to the finesse of Kathak Dance form, was produced by श्री  व्ही. शांताराम . The film was ‘झनक  झनक  पायल  बाजे ’.It was first movie of great Kathak maestro Late गोपी  कृष्ण  as a hero of a hindi film.Opposite him संध्या  was cast as heroine.Vasant Desai Ji got a situation when both of them are learning dance from their Guru and a memorable Raagmalika got created by him.The lyricist of songs used in this raagmaalika was famous poet हसरत  जयपुरी . It starts with the rendering of  a 'shloka':
       'गुरुर  ब्रम्हा  गुरुर  विष्णु  गुरुर  देवो  महेश्वरः।
        गुरुर  साक्षात्  परब्रम्ह  तस्मै  श्री  गुरवे  नमः।।  
 in the voice of singer मन्ना  डे , who continues the singing in राग  बसंत:
  “ रुत  बसंत  आयी ,
     वन वन उपवन द्रुम मिलिंद,
     प्रफुलित सुगंध मंद पवन,
     आवत मिलिंद मधुकर मधुर गुंजत,
     रुत बसंत…..।।”. 
 It is followed by the ‘तोड़ा ’ of कत्थक नृत्य   in the voice of गोपी  कृष्ण.
Then second song is presented again in the voice of मन्ना  डे , composed in राग  मेघ  मल्हार,It was:
 “आयी है घटा उमड़ घुमड़,
   घोर घिर चहूँ याम,
   उठत देत अति श्याम  वरन..,
   आयी है घटा  ….।।”
 Again a dance piece in the voice of Gopi Krishna is there and raagmalika continues with two further compositions , sung by लता  मंगेशकर .One is:
”पतझड़ आयी जलत उदासी,
  मैं  घबराई , नैना  रस  की  प्यासी..…।।”
 very well groomed in the flavour of राग  पहाड़ी  and the concluding number is:
 “ अब  तो  सजन  घर  आजा।
    हो मोरे सैंया ,मन का फूल खिला जा।
    अब तो सजन घर आजा...।।
    तड़प तड़प के ये बरखा बहार गुजरी है,
    जो रुत भी आयी है वो बेक़रार गुजरी है,
    राग मिलन के सुना जा...।।
    अब तो सजन घर आजा.....।।”
composed in राग  खम्माज .
The dance pieces are fitted in between these two last songs also and this raagmaalika ends with the diminishing voices of तोडा , टुकड़ा  and तत्कार  sung by गोपी  कृष्ण .This film is a landmark in the history of Hindi films,made very honestly by व्ही.शांताराम .You may not be knowing that before launching this film one day Shantaram Ji called Dr.Smt. सितारा  देवी ,a living legend,to present the various forms of Kathak dance before him, so that he may be able to justify himself in making a film on the art of dancing.The hero Gopi Krishna was son of Sitara Devi’s real sister तारा .Sitara ji is still an active dancer,running in the ninetees of her life. And in my opinion she still is at the top in the field of Kathak dancing.
